Six Flags Over Texas A Family Trip Guide

If you want to do Six Flags over Texas with Adults or kids, here is a handy guide put together from years of going there with my family. Six Flags Over Texas physical location is 2201 Road to Six Flags, Arlington, TX 76011. Here are directions to the park.

When To Go

There are a few really special days each summer when Six Flags is open until 10 Pm. The coasters are all lit up and it is always fun to do one when the lights are on. For this year it is Friday July 4th and Saturday July 5th. You can get there mid day or afternoon and still be able to make a day of it avoiding most of the heat. Most Saturdays in July, you will also find the park open until 9 Pm. Here is the park calendar

You could also go early season on a week day and have a better chance at some shorter lines. This year, Six Flags was open in April for weekends.

** Also, Six Flags Over Texas and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor are separate parks. Six flags over Texas does have some water attractions but if you want to do water slides check out Hurricane Harbor. It can be a day in itself.

What About Parking?

IF you get to the park early, try to snag a spot in the main lot. It can be a hot walk back, and it is easy to find your car in the main lot. The parking is paid at the gate and is cashless. You can get general parking for $30 and preferred parking for 45$. Is preferred worth it? If you really want to be up front or you come at an off time when the lots are full to the back 9, then yes preferred would be worth the extra 15 bucks. Parking Map

Rides

Six Flags Over Texas has rides of all thrill levels, from carnival style rides for kids to coasters that throw loops. Grab a map or use the app when you get to the park so you can check out all sections. Gotham has all your Batman stuff, and The Texas section is where you will find the Giant.

With Little Ones:

The Boomtown area has some great Looney Tunes Rides, the Taz Tornado swings and the Daffy Duck Bucket Blaster are two really fun ones for littles . For a kid-sized coaster, the Wile-E-Coyote Grand Canyon Blaster is a gentle coaster offering a minute long ride.

The Mini-Mine Train, we all rode it as kids and it was great. If you are 36" you can ride. Your mine car twists and turns through the mini mine and tunnels. You can find this one in the boomtown section of the park.

For Everyone

The Judge Roy Scream is a nice a moderate thrill, has some fun dips but no upside down sections. It is a part of Six Flags original coasters. The location is A+, right by the water and breezy on a hot day. A nice place to meet back up with the family and enjoy a ride all together.

The Roaring Rapids will cool you off on a hot day, you only have to be 36" tall to ride and the boats can hold 8-10 people. Really a fun ride if you hit the park with a bigger group. Pro tip do this ride towards the end of your trip, think wet shoes for hours..

For Thrill Seekers

Mr Freeze is a fast coaster. In a poll of many coasters ridden, there aren't many faster slinging 0-70 mph in 3.8 seconds, you then climb a 218 foot tower and do the whole ride again, but in reverse. It is a longer coaster ride clocking 1 min and 30 sec. total ride time. The line for this one can be long, if you can do it early

The Texas Giant, towering 153 ft in the air this wooden/ steel behemoth gives you some great views of the park. Clocking a ride time of 3 minutes and 25 seconds, the giant gives you a nice tour of the "Texas," section of the park and provides massive drops.

The Shockwave is it at night time, you can see this towering steel coasters lights from anywhere in the park. It will throw you for 2 wild loops and is not for anyone that doesn't have a strong appetite for thrill reaching top speeds of 55mph.

The Titan is super tall at a towering 245 feet and pulls 4.5 G's with so many unexpected twists and turns you just dont really know where you go next. The ride is lengthy and worth the line at 3 in and 20 seconds. Pro tip, this one is not good for kids.

How To Save On Tickets

If you are planning on going more than once, or even twice in the weekend you visit a gold pass might save you. If you are driving in you will be paying parking each day, the gold pass includes parking. So it pays for itself in about 2 visits. You also get 10% off food and merch, with the ability to add discounted friend tickets on certain days. Also, it is recommended to buy your tickets online, they are a bit cheaper than at the gate. Make sure to also grab the military/ first responder discount if it applies to you.

The Flash Pass

Skip the lines, kind of. The standard flash pass is 25-30$ and covers most of the main thrill rides. You use the app to reserve your place in line virtually and the flash pass alerts you when your turn is coming up. You then walk up to the ride but enter the "flash pass," lane and board immediately. It works because you can set your place in line, sit down and grab a drink or snack then board your coaster without the sometimes long line. On a day where the park is pretty empty, you will do ok without it, on a busy weekend it can be worth it.

The Ultimate flash pass is more expensive and is every kids dream of and Amusement Park with no lines. You set your immediate reservation and head straight to the priority boarding lane, the only rule is you must finish one coaster before heading to the next. Below are the rides the flash pass covers: Find them here:

  • BATMAN: The Ride

  • CATWOMAN Whip

  • JUSTICE LEAGUE: Battle for Metropolis

  • MR. FREEZE

  • New Texas Giant

  • Pandemonium

  • Pirates of Speelunker Cave

  • Runaway Mine Train

  • Runaway Mountain

  • Shock Wave

  • SUPERMAN: Tower of Power

  • THE JOKER

  • THE RIDDLER Revenge

  • Titan

What To Eat?

Food at Six Flags is scattered throughout the park. You will find actual Starbucks at Roller Coaster Coffee in the USA Section as well as a crispy warm funnel cake at Flags Funnel Cakes. If you want a healthier option, the Star Mall has smoked turkey legs and you can get street tacos at Texas Tacos. The Dippin Dots ice cream is it on a hot day and Johnny Rockets in Gotham has your chicken strips, and wings covered. You can even get a crepe at the creperie.

Six Flags has a no cooler or outside food policy unless you have medical needs. Make sure to have a good breakfast and drink plenty of water if you come in summer months.

What To Do Besides Rides?

Studio 6F and the Six Flags Universe Store in the USA section offer nice shopping. Do a walk around the path by the Judge Roy Scream and enjoy the lake. If you are riding rides in the USA section take a breather in the newly added Starbucks, located inside the Six Flags Universe gift shop. Go check out the El Asseradero water ride and watch each boat get splashed. You might head to Hurricane Harbor ( A separate park) and do some waterslides, or relax in the lazy river to cool off.

Where To Stay?

If you are coming in from out of town or just want to relax after a long day of fun check out the hotels really close to the park. The La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Arlington North 6 Flags offers a free shuttle within a 5 mile radius of the property, saving you on parking and who doesn't like to be driven around. Groupon has deals on the La Quinta here.

Four Points By Sheraton is less than a mile away from Six Flags, has an outdoor pool, and is a laid back place to stay for a weekend at Six Flags. They also have a fitness center, and a mini convenience store.
